I have always been drawn to creative and expressive mediums. I grew up in an artistic household. My mom, a ceramicist, never shied away from sharing her love of art and ensuring I spent time in spaces that valued creativity. Many of my earliest memories are fingerpainting at my local pool, and creating mosaic birdhouses or painting pottery for my birthday parties.
My studio art practice has also been informed by my early experiences as a dancer. Dance demands both precision and fluidity of movement, resulting in seemingly effortless execution built on hours of practice. Through the discipline of dance, I gained an appreciation for processes that require patience, repetition and focus. I rely on these same processes in my art. My favorite pieces reflect my love for immersive, labor-intensive pattern-making.
To create my complex designs, I begin with simple steps, building one atop another, until they yield a satisfying intricacy. By experimenting and playing with different materials and mediums, I add dimensionality to the patterns I make. I play with space through the distribution of color and pattern. My process allows my thoughts to wander and my intuition to guide me. In my landscape and figurative work, I toggle between realism and abstraction, distilling my own experiences in a way that leaves space for interpretation and provokes memory-making for others. The warmth and boldness of my colors infuse my work with a sense of nostalgia and intimacy.
